Arc Artist Fellowship

The Arc Artist Fellowship is a 4Culture funding opportunity providing operational support to individual artists as they pursue and develop their creative work. 4Culture's funding comes from Washington State Lodging Tax revenue, and its mission is to return those resources to the community through cultural investment. The Fellowship supports emerging, mid-career, and established artists and provides $15,000 awards along with modest promotional support. For the current cycle, the program focuses on artists who live in or work with rural communities in King County, Washington, particularly artists whose practices are rooted in engagement with rural residents, organizations, and networks and reflect the lived experiences, histories, and aspirations of rural places. The $15,000 Fellowship is intentionally unrestricted operational support. 4Culture states that artists value unrestricted funding because it allows them to apply resources when and where they are most needed while developing their practices. Examples of potential uses include rent or mortgage payments, childcare, health care, transportation, food, space rental, legal support, equipment, materials, workshop fees, residencies, and community support. Awardees will enter into an agreement with 4Culture requiring participation in a public cohort presentation or project organized by 4Culture during the fellowship year. Selected Fellows will also be asked to support planning and community engagement for the following year's Arc Artist Fellowship program. The program is competitive and is open to individual artists. Applicants must be at least 18 years old and residents of King County, Washington. For this cycle, applicants must also satisfy the Arc Eligibility Requirement by being artists who live in or work with rural communities in King County. This can include, but is not limited to, artists from Native and immigrant communities living and working in rural areas of the county. Current 4Culture staff, Board members, and Advisory Committee members are not eligible, and an artist who has previously received funding through the Arc Artist Fellowship may not apply again. Applications are submitted online through 4Culture's grant portal at apply.4culture.org. Applicants may save an application as a draft and continue working on it until the deadline, but an application becomes final after it is submitted. The application requires responses to five narrative questions based on the program criteria as well as work samples, work sample descriptions, and current-year demographic information in the applicant's account profile. Work samples are mandatory. Accepted attachments are JPEG, PDF, or Word documents under 2 MB each, while video and audio may be submitted only through public or unlisted YouTube, Vimeo, or SoundCloud links without passwords. Work samples must be limited to 5 minutes or 5 pages total, with applicants identifying the portion to review when a longer source work is provided. Full resumes, recommendation letters, oversized attachments, password-protected links, and links to personal websites, social media, cloud storage, film databases, or resume/CV websites are not accepted for review. Eligible applications are reviewed competitively by a peer panel of local artists and arts professionals from diverse disciplines after 4Culture staff first verifies eligibility. Staff facilitate the process but do not vote or attempt to influence the outcome. Evaluation considers Inspiration and Expertise, including the applicant's motivations, expertise, training, and creative experiences; Vision and Direction, including a three-year creative development plan and how the $15,000 Fellowship would support it; Quality and Innovation, demonstrated through a distinct creative perspective and work samples; Advancing Equity, based on benefits to or collaboration with communities of color and historically marginalized communities; and Public Benefit. Advancing Equity is an evaluation factor rather than an eligibility requirement. Through its Equity Investment approach, 4Culture also considers structural inequities. Additional consideration for this Fellowship is given to applicants based outside the City of Seattle, located in one of Seattle's Communities of Opportunity, or scoring highly on the Advancing Equity criterion. Applications are due September 30, 2026, at 5:00 p.m. PDT, and applicants are expected to be notified in December 2026. No separate LOI, concept paper, pre-proposal, or other pre-application gating deadline is identified. Applicants seeking emailed feedback on a draft should contact 4Culture no later than September 16, but this is an optional support opportunity rather than an application prerequisite. Address Inspiration and Expertise, Vision and Direction, Quality and Innovation, and Advancing Equity directly; present a clear three-year creative development plan and explain how the $15,000 Fellowship supports it; select work samples that strongly exemplify the practice; keep combined samples within the review limits; personalize any AI-assisted narrative so it authentically represents the artist; consider attending a workshop because 4Culture states that its strongest applications tend to come from workshop participants.
