Virginia Wildlife Grant Program
This program provides financial support to colleges, universities, and nonprofit organizations to promote outdoor recreational activities and engage diverse communities in nature experiences.
The Virginia Wildlife Grant Program is a collaborative initiative managed by the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) and the Wildlife Foundation of Virginia (WFV). It aims to connect Virginians to outdoor recreation through funding support for organizations with aligned missions. This program supports activities such as archery, boating and paddling, fishing, hunting and recreational shooting, and wildlife viewing. Its broader goal is to enhance recruitment and retention within these outdoor practices, with a particular emphasis on inclusive access and engagement with underrepresented communities. The grant program aligns closely with DWR’s R3 Plan (Recruitment, Retention, and Reactivation) and the Inclusive Excellence Strategic Plan. Funding for the program comes from a combination of merchandise sales, corporate and individual contributions, purchase round-ups, and fundraising events. Programs funded through this initiative are expected to reflect strategic priorities such as introducing new participants to outdoor experiences, nurturing continued engagement, and helping individuals overcome barriers to long-term participation. Two main award categories are offered: the Start-up track for new or emerging programs under two years old, and the Growth track for established programs with at least two years of history. Funding levels for the Start-up category range from $2,000 to $5,000, while the Growth category ranges from $5,000 to $10,000. Awards are competitive, with approximately 10 to 15 recipients selected annually based on available funds from the previous year’s contributions. To qualify, applicants must be either two- or four-year colleges/universities or registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations. Proposed programs must focus on at least one eligible activity area and outline primary and secondary outdoor activity objectives. Applications must be submitted online and include a program description, participant demographics, goals, measurable objectives, a budget, and a list of community partners. Eligible expenses include outdoor gear and equipment, transportation, and instructor support such as training and licensure. Non-allowable expenses include refreshments, T-shirts, and general staff salaries. The application period runs from January 1 to February 1, 2025. Applications are reviewed in February 2025, with grant agreements to be signed within 15 days of notification. Grantees receive 100% of awarded funds upfront, with checks expected to be deposited by March 2025. The project implementation window extends through December 1, 2025, at which time a final report is also due.
