R. Harold Burton Foundation Grants
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit organizations in the greater Salt Lake area that focus on education, science, literacy, and health and human services.
The R. Harold Burton Foundation offers grant funding to established tax-exempt organizations and institutions whose purposes are charitable or educational, with a primary service area focused on the greater Salt Lake metropolitan region. Founded to support initiatives that improve community well-being, the Foundation prioritizes impact within sectors including education, science, literacy, and health and human services. Organizations must hold 501(c)(3) status to be eligible, and the Foundation requires documentation to verify this designation. Funding is not extended to individuals, lobbying organizations, start-up initiatives, fundraising events, undifferentiated overhead expenses, or endowments. The Foundation operates on a biannual funding cycle. Applicants may submit only one proposal per calendar year, and applications may be rolled over to the next cycle at the discretion of the Board. Two deadlines govern the process: February 15 for spring consideration and August 15 for fall. In 2026, those dates are adjusted to February 18 and August 15, respectively, with specific timelines for review, notification, and disbursement. All applications must be submitted in hard copy and printed on white, single-sided paper, using the Foundation’s provided format in either Microsoft Word or PDF. Email submissions are not accepted. The application requires comprehensive information about the applicant organization and the project for which funding is sought. Applicants must describe their mission, the geographic focus of their services, and provide detailed staff and salary data. The funding request must include the specific amount sought, the total project cost, the organization's annual operating budget, and any past support received from the Foundation. A project timetable, funding need date, and a list of committed donors are also required, along with financial documentation including program budgets, organizational budgets, and audited financials. Applicants must submit an IRS 501(c)(3) exemption letter and a copy of the most recent Form 990 (including Schedule A). They are also asked to list the names and professions of their board members. The Foundation places a high emphasis on accountability and requires a full accounting of grant expenditures and reporting on the project’s outcomes if funded. Grants are typically awarded in May–June for spring applications and in November–December for fall applications. The program is recurring on an annual basis, with the next anticipated application cycle beginning in January 2027. The Foundation does not publish contact emails or phone numbers online, and submission instructions emphasize adherence to the specified format and process for consideration.
