Opera Grants for Women Composers: Discovery Grants is an OPERA America program supported by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. OPERA America states that it has awarded more than $23 million to opera companies and artists across North America over the past five decades and has provided grants directly to composers and librettists from all performing arts disciplines since 2009. The Discovery Grants program supports individual women composers in exploring opera as an artistic medium and is intended to advance the development of new operas while contributing to greater gender parity and diversity in the field. OPERA America defines opera for this program as a music-theater experience with a dramatic arc written for trained voices of all genres and accompanied by instruments. Discovery Grants support performance-based developmental activities for works in progress. Examples include libretto readings, workshops, and working performances, although these examples are not intended to limit an applicant's proposed developmental goals. OPERA America expects to make 6-8 Discovery Grants, with each recipient receiving up to $15,000 toward eligible project costs. Recipients also receive complimentary registrations, transportation, and a housing stipend valued at $2,250 for attendance at OPERA America's 2026 and 2027 Opera Conferences, as well as mentorship and professional development opportunities, recognition through Opera America Magazine, and an OPERA America individual membership. Projects that are further along in the development process may receive priority in funding selection. Eligible grant expenses include fees for vocalists, instrumentalists, other performers, music directors, conductors, dramaturgs, orchestrators, arrangers, copyists, stage directors, vocal coaches, sound designers, and stage managers. Eligible costs may also include rehearsal and workshop venue rental, equipment rental, project recording, preparation of new musical materials, childcare or eldercare during rehearsals or workshops, research materials, transportation and housing for project personnel, and composer living expenses of up to 30 percent of the grant request. Airfare is limited to coach class. Funds may not support commissioning fees for composers or librettists, fully staged production sets, costumes or properties, institutional overhead, general administrative expenses, competition or contest application fees, tuition, professional development fees, fundraising, ticket subsidies, or expenses related to a fully produced premiere for public presentation. Grants may cover up to 100 percent of eligible expenses and no matching funds are required. Applicants must be individual composers who identify as cis or trans women and must be United States citizens, permanent residents, or individuals with Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals status. Applicants must demonstrate their ability to write music and/or text through work samples, and creators from all performing arts disciplines may apply. Projects involving multiple composers or collectives are permitted, but one applicant must serve as the sole representative and grant recipient. An artist may participate on only one applicant team with one project, and only one proposal may be submitted per cycle. Previous Discovery Grant recipients and applicants whose work previously received an OPERA America Commissioning Grant are ineligible. The same work may be considered for no more than three cycles, and applicants returning after two unsuccessful cycles must describe substantive changes. Previously premiered works are eligible only when the proposal represents a substantial reworking. Application is through OPERA America's Grants Portal. An intent to apply form was required by December 18, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET, and only applicants who submitted that form could proceed to the full application. Applicants were notified whether the intent to apply advanced to the application stage. The complete application, including supplemental materials, was due January 22, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Required materials include two hosted audio or video work samples, with combined duration no longer than 20 minutes and neither sample longer than 10 minutes. At least one sample must feature non-digitally-generated voices. Applicants also submit written narrative statements about the creative team, a personal statement, an explanation of the proposed work, a description of the grant project, and a project budget listing anticipated expenses and confirmed or prospective revenue. Scores or other visual representations of musical works are optional. Final applications are reviewed by an independent panel of experts approved by OPERA America's board of directors. Panelists evaluate applications through a cultural humility lens using Artistic Ability, Distinction in Concept and Planning, and Evaluation as the stated criteria. Competitive applications should demonstrate artistic quality, appropriate and thorough planning, and realistic, achievable goals for assessing both the proposed activity and the development process. The guidelines also state that recent compositions demonstrating an ability to create theatrical works for trained voice and instrumental ensemble are especially competitive, and samples demonstrating aptitude for theatrical storytelling are recommended. Applicants are strongly encouraged to provide excerpts from the proposed work when available and should explain the stylistic relationship of other samples when excerpts from the proposed work are unavailable. Grantees were scheduled to be notified in February 2026, with the grant period running from April 1, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Expenses incurred before April 1, 2026, are not eligible. The first payment installment may not exceed 75 percent of the total award and may be requested after submission of a signed award agreement and updated budget and participation in a 15-minute orientation call. Full payment requires completion of final narrative and budget documentation and participation in a final interview. Unspent funds revert to OPERA America unless a written extension is approved, and funds must be repaid if the approved project is not carried out.
