Grant Description

The Technical Assistance & Professional Development Grants program is offered by the Roundhouse Foundation, a private philanthropic organization focused on strengthening rural communities and supporting nonprofit partners. The foundation emphasizes capacity building by investing in opportunities that enhance organizational effectiveness, leadership development, and long-term sustainability. Recognizing that nonprofits often lack resources for internal development, this grant is designed to remove financial barriers to training, planning, and specialized tools that can improve operations and community impact. The primary purpose of this grant is to support nonprofit organizations, government entities, and Tribal governments in accessing professional development and technical assistance opportunities. Eligible activities include attending conferences or trainings, hiring consultants for strategic or succession planning, and purchasing specialized equipment or software essential to an organization’s work. The program encourages applicants to prioritize a single, clearly defined activity that will provide measurable benefit to both the organization and the community it serves. Funding is intended to support forward-looking investments rather than reimburse past expenses. Awards are offered in amounts up to $5,000, and applicants are expected to request only what is necessary to successfully complete the proposed activity. Funding is limited and distributed on a rolling basis until annual funds are exhausted. The foundation does not guarantee funding for all applicants and prioritizes organizations that have previously received Roundhouse Foundation support, as well as those aligned with key initiative areas such as journalism and storytelling, arts and culture, rural fire and emergency services, and food access programs connected to Oregon regional food banks. Eligibility is restricted to organizations with qualifying nonprofit or governmental status, including 501(c)(3) organizations, fiscally sponsored groups, government entities, and Tribal governments. Individuals, political activities, and religious organizations are not eligible for funding. Only one application per organization is permitted, and proposed projects must not already be completed or paid for. Organizations must also demonstrate alignment with the foundation’s mission and provide evidence of organizational support for the proposed activity. The application process is conducted through an online grants portal and requires detailed information about the proposed activity, including cost breakdown, timeline, participant details, and anticipated benefits. Applicants must also upload supporting documentation such as conference agendas, consultant scopes of work, or equipment quotes. For professional development requests, a letter of support from a supervisor or board member is required. Additional organizational documentation may be required for first-time applicants, including board lists and financial information. Applications are accepted from January through November 30 each year or until funds are exhausted, making this a rolling opportunity within that window. The review process typically takes four to eight weeks, and applicants are encouraged to submit well in advance of their planned activity. Projects must occur within twelve months of application submission, and the foundation generally cannot consider requests for activities occurring within four weeks of submission. For time-sensitive needs, applicants are advised to contact the foundation directly. Successful applicants are required to submit a brief final report after completing the funded activity, reflecting on outcomes and organizational impact. This report is due within two months of project completion. The Roundhouse Foundation may also share application information with regional funding partners to foster collaboration and increase visibility for aligned projects, unless applicants opt out. Overall, the program is designed to strengthen nonprofit capacity through targeted, practical investments that support long-term organizational growth and community benefit.
