Grant Description

The Lithuanian Foundation is a private, Illinois-based not-for-profit organization dedicated to preserving and fostering Lithuanian culture, traditions, and heritage both within the United States and across global Lithuanian communities. As a 501(c)(3) entity, the Foundation allocates financial support to initiatives that demonstrate measurable contributions to cultural continuity, education, and community cohesion. Its grantmaking strategy emphasizes long-term impact and prioritizes programs that serve both Lithuanian diaspora populations and broader communities through collaborative and innovative approaches. The Project Grants program supports initiatives aligned with four primary areas: education, culture, youth, and community development. Educational projects are intended to strengthen Lithuanian heritage schools and expand knowledge for future generations. Cultural initiatives are expected to promote Lithuanian identity through artistic expression and community participation. Youth-focused programs prioritize engagement of younger generations through camps, performances, and organizational development. Community-based projects are designed to build partnerships and strengthen communal ties among Lithuanian populations. Funding decisions are guided by a structured priority hierarchy. Preference is given first to Lithuanian American Community organizations, followed by Lithuanian American youth organizations, Lithuanian World Community entities, other United States-based organizations, Lithuanian diaspora organizations outside the United States, and finally Lithuanian organizations. The Foundation explicitly seeks projects that demonstrate collaboration and synergy with other programs, thereby amplifying their impact. The program imposes several restrictions on funding. It does not support requests from individuals, for-profit businesses without clear nonprofit alignment, organizations lacking federal tax-exempt status in the United States, governmental or political entities, or projects involving personal expenses such as travel, clothing, or direct charitable aid. Additionally, capital improvements for organizations that do not fully own their facilities are ineligible. These restrictions ensure that funds are used strictly for mission-aligned, nonprofit purposes. Applications must be submitted electronically through the Foundation’s grant portal. Required documentation includes financial statements, organizational registration documents, IRS Form 990 for U.S. entities, proof of tax-exempt status, and additional media-related forms when applicable. All materials must be submitted in English or Lithuanian, with translations required for other languages. Applicants may submit multiple applications, but only one per activity category is permitted, requiring consolidation of similar activities into a single submission. For the second allocation cycle, applications are accepted from July 1 through September 1, 2026. The review process is conducted by the Grants Commission, composed of representatives from both the Lithuanian Foundation and the Lithuanian American Community. Recommendations are forwarded to the Board of Directors for final approval. Applicants are notified of decisions in December 2026 for the second cycle. Funding is distributed on a reimbursement basis rather than upfront. Approved recipients must submit a final project report, including financial documentation and receipts, before funds are disbursed. This ensures accountability and proper use of funds. Due to limited resources, not all qualified proposals can be funded, and decisions may reflect strategic priorities and budget constraints rather than project merit alone.
