Quailwood Fund
This fund provides financial support for community projects, conservation efforts, and educational scholarships to enhance the quality of life for residents in the Red Rock area of Columbia County, New York.
The Quailwood Fund, established by Jonathan Schor (1946–2004), supports community development and enhancement in the Red Rock area of Columbia County, New York. A long-time resident of Red Rock, Schor created the fund to foster public services and improve the overall quality of life in the area. The fund is administered through an advisory committee comprising representatives from the Red Rock Volunteer Fire Company, Red Rock Historical Society, Canaan Conservation Club, Columbia Land Conservancy, and the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation. The fund aims to sustain and enrich Red Rock's community by supporting a variety of initiatives, including conservation efforts, public recreation facilities, fire and rescue services, and educational scholarships. Grantmaking focuses on long-term community needs, encouraging diverse participation, and promoting inclusivity and economic opportunity. Grants are open to nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status and public entities whose programs or projects both serve and take place in the Red Rock area. An exception is made for the Canaan Conservation Club, whose projects must benefit Red Rock residents even if not located there. Capital improvement requests are considered, especially those that maximize community benefit. Public infrastructure proposals are also eligible if they enhance rather than replace government-funded services. Funding awards typically range from $500 to $10,000, with the possibility of up to $20,000 for projects deemed of exceptional importance. All grants from the Quailwood General Fund require a 1:1 matching contribution. For grants up to $7,500, at least 50% of the match must be in cash. For grants exceeding $7,500, a minimum of 25% of the match must be in cash, with the remainder allowed in-kind. Multi-year grants of up to three years are considered, provided the recipient submits an annual progress report. Applications are evaluated by the Fund for Columbia County advisory committee using criteria such as project quality, community impact, and feasibility. The review process assesses alignment with the fund’s purpose, project timing, involvement of qualified individuals or organizations, and the applicant’s demonstrated ability to successfully complete similar efforts. All grantees must adhere to non-discrimination policies. The application deadline is February 15, 2026, and submissions are made through the fund’s online portal.
