The Community and Youth Grants program of the Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation (PHSACF) provides biannual funding to projects that improve quality of life for residents of Emmet County, Michigan. With support from unrestricted, field of interest, and donor-advised funds, the program addresses a broad spectrum of local needs through its spring and fall grant cycles.
The program supports nonprofit organizations, schools, and local government entities across diverse priority areas such as arts and culture, community and economic development, education, environment, health and human services, recreation, and youth services. Grant proposals may include requests for program expenses, salaries, capacity building, capital projects, or general operating support. On average, grant awards are approximately $7,800, though there is no formal minimum or maximum, and requests of all sizes are welcomed.
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, public and private educational institutions, tribal governments, and faith-based entities offering nonsectarian programs. Organizations without tax-exempt status may apply through a qualified fiscal sponsor. All proposals must benefit residents of Emmet County. Funding is not available for religious activities, political campaigns, debt retirement, or services typically considered a core governmental or educational responsibility.
The Fall 2025 grant cycle includes two steps: an inquiry due by September 24, 2025, and a full application deadline of October 1, 2025. Funding decisions will be announced by the end of November. Interested applicants may attend information sessions held on September 8 and September 11, 2025. Grants are evaluated by a committee using criteria that assess organizational readiness, project relevance, impact, planning, and financial sustainability.
