The TJX Foundation operates as the corporate philanthropic arm of The TJX Companies, focusing its charitable giving on strengthening communities where it maintains a physical presence. Its mission emphasizes supporting vulnerable families and children by improving access to essential resources and opportunities that contribute to long-term stability and success. The foundation prioritizes partnerships with nonprofit organizations that can demonstrate measurable community impact, particularly in areas aligned with its defined giving priorities. The grant program is limited to four primary focus areas. These include providing basic needs such as food, clothing, and shelter; supporting access to out-of-school opportunities that enhance academic success for at-risk youth from pre-kindergarten through grade 12; workforce readiness training for at-risk youth ages 16 to 24; and initiatives that promote safety from relationship abuse. Funding is intended to support programmatic efforts that directly align with these areas, rather than general organizational expenses or unrelated initiatives. The foundation outlines strict funding restrictions. It does not provide support for capital campaigns, staff salaries, general operating expenses, scholarships, sponsorships, or fundraising events. Additionally, it excludes funding for political activities, municipalities, educational institutions such as schools and colleges, and organizations that require adherence to specific beliefs as a condition of receiving services. This ensures that funds are directed toward direct service delivery rather than administrative or indirect uses. Eligibility requirements are clearly defined. Organizations must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofits that have maintained this status for at least 12 months. They must operate within 15 miles of a TJX store, distribution center, or office, ensuring geographic alignment with the company’s community footprint. Applicants must not have received funding from TJX within the previous 12 months and must maintain a public nondiscrimination policy that complies with federal, state, and local protections across a wide range of protected classes. The application process is structured as a multi-step progression. Organizations must first review the foundation’s mission and guidelines to confirm alignment. They then complete an eligibility questionnaire through the designated system. If deemed eligible, applicants are invited to submit a Letter of Inquiry through an online portal that requires a Blackbaud ID. Only organizations that pass this stage may be invited to submit a full application, making the LOI a critical gating step in the process. The Letter of Inquiry submission window opens annually on February 1 and closes on October 31, with submissions reviewed on a rolling basis throughout this period. Due to high demand, not all qualified organizations will receive funding or be invited to advance. Selected applicants will be invited to complete a full application, after which final funding decisions are made. Approved grants are distributed directly to recipient organizations following review.
