The purpose of this FOA is to provide support for institutional research training programs in Alzheimers Disease/Alzheimers Disease-Related Dementias (AD/ADRD). These institutional research training programs should produce well-trained neuroscientists who leave the program with the research skills and scientific knowledge to make a significant contribution to research on AD/ADRD cognitive impairment and dementia. Programs should be designed to enhance the breadth and depth of training across the spectrum AD/ADRD research areas (e.g. AD, Vascular Contributions to Cognitive Impairment and Dementia (VCID), Lewy Body Dementia (LBD), Fronto-temporal Dementia (FTD) and mixed dementias) by incorporating didactic, research and career development components within this theme into a program that fosters exceptional research skills and knowledge. Programs may support basic, clinical and/or translational research. Programs supported by this FOA must include formal components to ensure a thorough understanding of experimental design, statistical principles and methodological approaches, analytical skills, and skills for communicating science, both orally and in writing, to a wide variety of audiences. All programs are expected to design and/or provide opportunities and activities that will foster the development of quantitative literacy and the application of quantitative approaches to the trainees' research. These training programs are intended to be 2 years in duration and support training of one or more of the following groups: dissertation stage predoctoral students in their 3rd and/or 4th year of graduate school, postdoctoral fellows and fellowship-stage clinicians. Reissue of RFA-NS-18-019: Understanding the dynamic activity of neural circuits is central to the NIH BRAIN Initiative. The invention, proof-of-concept investigation, and optimization of new technologies through iterative feedback from end users are key components of the BRAIN Initiative. This FOA seeks applications to optimize existing or emerging technologies through iterative testing with end users. In conjunction, the manufacturing techniques should be scalable towards sustainable, broad dissemination and user-friendly incorporation into regular neuroscience research.Proposed technologies should be compatible with experiments in behaving animals, validated under in vivo experimental conditions, and capable of reducing major barriers to conducting neurobiological experiments and making new discoveries about the CNS. Technologies may engage diverse types of signaling beyond neuronal electrical activity such as optical, electrical, magnetic, acoustic or genetic recording/manipulation. Applications that seek to integrate multiple approaches are encouraged. The overarching goal of this R25 program is to support educational activities that encourage individuals from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to pursue further studies or careers in research. Background A major goal of the National Plan to address Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and Alzheimer’s Disease-related Dementias (ADRD) is to reduce the burden of AD/ADRD by accelerating research toward treatments, improving care and support for people facing these conditions now, and reducing the risk of AD/ADRD by promoting brain health. Despite this, there is a shortage of scientists conducting the wide variety of necessary innovative and interdisciplinary research projects, including basic biomedical, clinical, translational, prevention, and treatment research on AD/ADRD. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) aims to address goal G-4 of the National Institute on Aging's Strategic Directions for Research (2020-2025): Attract and train more researchers from diverse scientific and cultural backgrounds." This will include supporting the recruitment of early-stage investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the biomedical and behavioral sciences, to the NIH AD/ADRD portfolio. This FOA also aims to address the lack of early exposure to high-quality, hands-on research education experiences in the AD/ADRD field, another major barrier to increasing the AD/ADRD capable workforce. To further expand the AD/ADRD training pipeline for earlier stage students, NIA will support summer research experiences for high school students, undergraduates, or science teachers. The expectation is that such a program would incubate and develop the next generation of early-stage investigators to pursue research careers representative of in NIA mission critical areas, namely AD/ADRD research. Proposed programs should provide authentic "open-ended", hands-on exposure to AD/ADRD research as it relates to aging as part of a comprehensive program based in sound educational practices designed to stimulate the interest and advance the knowledge base of participants. In addition to hands-on research experiences, programs are expected to include complementary educational enrichment activities that support the participants' scientific development, such as relevant workshops (e.g., scientific writing and presentation skills), journal clubs, technical laboratory coursework, and training in rigor and reproducibility. Program goals and objectives should be grounded in literature and appropriate for the educational level of the audience to be reached, including the content to be conveyed, and the intended outcome(s). Outcomes for high school students may include preparing them for undergraduate admissions and enhancing their interest in pursuing a science decree. Outcomes for college students may include: reinforcing their intent to graduate with a science degree, preparing them for graduate or medical school admissions, and/or preparing them for careers in AD/ADRD research. Support for science teachers will be limited to those programs with a clear plan for how teachers will utilize their summer experience in their teaching during the school year, such as enhancing the STEM curriculum or increasing number of STEM courses taught. Focus on High School Students, Undergraduates, or Science Teachers: Science education research has demonstrated that early exposure to scientific research leads to the retention of trainees in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). The President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) specifically highlights the need for retention of trainees in STEM by involving them in contemporary, hands-on research experiences especially during the first two years of college. Summer research experiences provide important experiential learning to sustain students interests in STEM and medicine careers. The short-term summer experience, in contrast to a year-long experience, allows for a focused and concentrated effort on instruction, and intentionally coincides with the time of year when the target populations of this program (i.e., high school students, undergraduate college students, and science teachers) would typically have the opportunity to engage in such a research educational experience. For the purpose of this announcement, institutions should explain how this program will be developed in a way that will foster diversity and inclusion at their organization. The expectation is that such a program would help to transition the next generation of early-stage investigators into research careers representative of NIA mission critical areas, namely AD/ADRD research. Proposed programs should involve participants in independent research projects in AD/ADRD as it relates to aging. Participants will be required to work as research postbaccalaureates at nine person-months (75% full-time) effort, with the other three person-months (25% full-time effort) devoted to further academic and professional development. Academic development opportunities may include courses, seminars, or supplemental instruction that will enhance the technical, operational, and professional skills of the participants. Training in rigor and reproducibility is required. Professional development opportunities may include entrance exam preparation and conference and workshop participation. Program training objectives and mentoring activities should be grounded in literature and enable trainees to pursue advanced degrees and other research-related science career opportunities. Focus on Postbaccalaureates: Postbaccalaureate programs consist of studies pursued after the completion of one's bachelor’s degree, but before entering an advanced degree program, such as a master s, doctoral, or clinical degree program. The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) reports an increased number of prospective medical students taking time off between the completion of their undergraduate education and enrollment in medical school. While students may take these gap years for a variety of reasons and be involved in a range of activities, almost half of such students report being involved in research during this time. Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted students decisions to take gap years in a way that has been leading to a rise in the number of students taking this path. Literature shows that postbaccalaureate programs enable recent graduates to pursue advanced degrees and other research-related science career opportunities. For the purpose of this announcement, institutions should explain how this program will be developed in a way that will foster diversity and inclusion at their organization.
