Preserve NY Arts + Culture: Support for Pre-Construction Studies
This grant provides financial support to nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in New York State for essential pre-construction studies that help plan the rehabilitation and maintenance of their historic properties.
The Preserve New York Arts + Culture Support for Pre-Construction Studies program is administered by the Preservation League of New York State in partnership with the New York State Council on the Arts. The program is designed to support nonprofit arts and cultural organizations in New York State by funding planning and technical studies that precede building repair, rehabilitation, or capital improvement projects. The Preservation League, founded in 1974, works to advance historic preservation as a tool for community revitalization and sustainable development, while NYSCA provides broad support for arts and culture statewide. This grant program reflects a collaborative effort to strengthen cultural infrastructure and ensure that historic arts spaces remain accessible and functional. The primary purpose of this funding opportunity is to assist eligible organizations in preparing for future capital work through professional consulting studies. These studies may include building condition reports, engineering analyses, accessibility studies, energy audits, and historic structure reports. The program strictly limits funding to planning and study activities and explicitly excludes construction costs, architectural design documents, and capital repairs. By supporting pre-construction analysis, the program enables organizations to make informed decisions, improve project readiness, and position themselves for future funding opportunities. Funding is offered in two tiers based on project scope. Short Studies for Small Projects provide up to 10000 dollars for targeted assessments, while Comprehensive Studies for Capital Projects offer up to 20000 dollars for broader planning efforts. Awards typically range between 5000 and 20000 dollars. All grants require a 10 percent cash match, and in-kind contributions or staff time are not eligible toward this requirement. Funds may be used for consultant fees, travel, photography, and report production, but not for administrative overhead or internal staffing costs. Eligibility is limited to 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts and cultural organizations located in New York State. Applicants must demonstrate ownership or long-term control of a historic resource that is at least 50 years old and actively used for public-facing arts or cultural programming. If the applicant does not own the property, they must maintain a lease or agreement with at least six years remaining. Additional requirements include the completion of any prior grants from the Preservation League and the engagement of qualified professionals to conduct the study. The application process consists of a required pre-application followed by a full application for those invited to proceed. The pre-application must be submitted online by April 17, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Approved applicants receive a link to the full application, which must be completed by April 24, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. Eastern Time. Applicants are notified of funding decisions approximately 12 weeks after the final deadline. The review process includes evaluation by an independent panel using criteria related to project quality, organizational capacity, and public service impact. Successful applicants are required to execute a grant contract and consultant agreement prior to receiving funds. Projects must be completed within one year of the contract date. At the conclusion of the project, grantees must submit a final report in PDF format to the Preservation League to formally close out the grant. The program emphasizes accountability, project feasibility, and alignment with long-term preservation goals, as well as broader priorities such as diversity, equity, inclusion, and climate resilience.
