Volunteer Fire Department Grant
This funding opportunity provides financial support to small, volunteer, or combination fire departments in Missouri to enhance their fire protection capabilities through the purchase of essential equipment and supplies.
The Missouri Department of Public Safety is offering funding through the Volunteer Fire Department Grant (VFDG), a state-administered program aimed at enhancing fire protection capabilities across Missouri. Designed specifically for small, volunteer, or combination fire departments, this grant opportunity seeks to provide critical resources to organizations that serve local communities with limited financial means. The funding is made possible through the State of Missouri, reflecting the state’s commitment to public safety and emergency preparedness. The primary objective of the VFDG is to support fire protection entities by funding equipment and supplies necessary for effective fire suppression and related services. These services may include fire prevention, rescue operations, emergency medical services, hazardous material response, and other specialized operations within a defined geographic area. Eligible applicants are those Missouri-based fire departments or districts with annual operating budgets of $50,000 or less and who are registered in compliance with Section 320.271 RSMo. Additionally, only departments that are volunteer or combination in nature qualify. Grant recipients may use the funds for purchasing turnout gear or interoperability communications equipment, provided they meet certain policy requirements. For example, turnout gear applicants must provide a documented policy on gear maintenance and cleaning. Communications equipment must comply with SAFECOM Guidance and Missouri’s Radio Interoperability Guidelines. The Missouri Interoperability Center will evaluate all equipment-related requests for compliance. Unallowable expenses include vehicles, drones, personnel costs, construction, taxes, training, and items not compliant with state interoperability standards. The total available funding for this cycle is $1,455,000, with a maximum award of $15,000 per applicant. A mandatory 5% cash match is required. The projected performance period for awarded projects is five months, from December 15, 2025, to May 15, 2026. Applications open on October 15, 2025, and will be accepted through the Missouri DPS WebGrants portal until the total funding is committed. Awards will be made on a first-come, first-served basis, emphasizing timely submission. Applicants must complete several required forms, including the Contact Information Form, Budget, and applicable supporting documentation like quotes and turnout gear policies. Applications must be submitted online via the DPS WebGrants System. By submitting, applicants agree to the NOFO requirements and all award terms. For assistance, potential applicants may contact any of the listed grant officials: Maria Robinett (573-522-2126), Joanne Talleur (573-522-2851), Chelsey Call (573-526-9203), or Joni McCarter (573-526-9020).
