Grant Description

The Scholarly Editions and Translations program is administered by the National Endowment for the Humanities through its Division of Research, an agency established to support the advancement and dissemination of knowledge in the humanities. This program specifically focuses on enabling collaborative scholarly efforts to edit, annotate, and translate foundational texts that are critical to advancing humanities research but are currently unavailable in sufficient scholarly editions or translations. Since its inception in 1966, the program has supported the development of authoritative editions across disciplines such as history, literature, philosophy, and music. The current funding cycle restricts eligible projects to those centered on American history and culture or Western civilization, covering periods from antiquity to the present. The primary objective of the program is to enhance access to key humanities texts by supporting projects that produce high quality scholarly editions or translations. These projects must include substantial scholarly apparatus such as annotations, introductions, and contextual analysis that help interpret the texts for academic and public audiences. Projects may result in print editions, digital editions, or hybrid formats, with a strong preference for those that provide free public access. Translation projects must be into English only, and all work must adhere to recognized editorial and translation standards such as those established by the Association for Documentary Editing or the Modern Language Association. Funding is offered across three categories: Planning, Implementation, and Chairman Special Awards. Planning grants support preparatory activities such as corpus development and editorial policy design, while Implementation grants fund the production of editions and translations. Chairman Special Awards provide substantial support for large scale projects of exceptional importance in American history and culture. Funds may be used for salaries, travel to archives, transcription, translation, research, and digital development, but cannot support activities such as political advocacy, equipment purchases, or the development of standalone digital tools. Matching funds are optional but available for certain award categories. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations, accredited institutions of higher education, state and local governments, and federally recognized tribal governments within the United States. Projects must involve at least two scholars working collaboratively, and a designated project director must lead the effort. Applications must be submitted through Grants.gov and include required components such as a narrative, work plan, budget, samples of work, and supporting documentation. The narrative must address significance, methodology, collaboration, project history, and dissemination plans, and will be evaluated based on intellectual merit, feasibility, and potential impact on humanities scholarship. The application process requires strict adherence to formatting and submission guidelines. All materials must be complete and submitted by the deadline, with no extensions granted for registration issues. Peer reviewers assess applications based on established criteria including significance, methods, collaborator qualifications, productivity, and publication strategy. Final funding decisions are made by the NEH Chairman following review by the National Council on the Humanities. The application deadline for this funding opportunity is September 16, 2026. Award announcements are anticipated in July 2027, with project start dates required between November 1, 2027 and August 1, 2028. Periods of performance vary by funding category, ranging from one to five years. The program is offered on a recurring basis, typically annually, and applicants may submit multiple proposals for distinct projects, although individuals may serve as project director on only one application per cycle. For additional information or assistance, applicants may contact the Division of Research via email or phone.
