Otto Bremer Trust Community Responsive Fund
This funding opportunity supports Montana-based nonprofits that provide direct services in critical areas such as food access, housing, affordable healthcare, disability services, and school-based mental health for local residents.
The Otto Bremer Trust Community Responsive Fund is a philanthropic grant program administered in partnership with the Montana Community Foundation, designed to support nonprofit organizations serving communities across Montana. The Otto Bremer Trust, established in 1944, has distributed more than one billion dollars to advance community well-being throughout its service region. Through this collaboration, the Montana Community Foundation acts as an intermediary, implementing grantmaking aligned with the Trust’s priorities, eligibility requirements, and evaluation standards. The Community Responsive Fund reflects a commitment to addressing both urgent needs and emerging opportunities in Montana through targeted, impact-driven investments. The purpose of the fund is to support organizations that provide direct services in key areas identified by the Trust’s Trustees. For the current funding cycle, the program prioritizes five core focus areas: food access through meal sites and food pantries, short-term and emergency shelter for individuals experiencing housing instability, low-income healthcare services including medical, dental, and mental health care, disability services supporting individuals with physical or cognitive disabilities, and school-based mental health initiatives. These priorities are reviewed annually and may evolve to remain responsive to changing community needs across the state. Funding through this program may be used for operations, programming, and capital projects, provided that the majority of funds are directed toward direct service delivery. Administrative expenses are limited to no more than ten percent of the total grant amount. Individual awards may reach up to seventy-five thousand dollars, and additional constraints apply based on the applicant’s prior fiscal year philanthropic support. Projects that attempt to influence public policy, support events or sponsorships, or operate under fiscal sponsorship arrangements are explicitly ineligible. Eligibility is limited primarily to nonprofit organizations that hold a valid 501(c)(3) designation and serve beneficiaries residing in Montana. Government entities, including public schools, are not eligible, although non-public schools may apply. Organizations are generally expected to demonstrate at least five years of continuous operations, maintain audited financial statements, and meet certain financial thresholds; however, some flexibility exists for a limited number of awards. Applicants must also not have an active strategic grant from the Otto Bremer Trust at the time of application. Applications must be submitted online through the Montana Community Foundation’s grant portal during the designated application window. The process requires organizations to demonstrate alignment with funding priorities, articulate community need, and provide evidence of program feasibility and sustainability. Proposals are reviewed by external advisory committees composed of subject matter experts. Evaluation criteria emphasize service to underserved populations, particularly rural and tribal communities, measurable impact, community engagement, and the ability to deliver sustainable outcomes. For the current cycle, applications open on April 15, 2026, and close on May 18, 2026. Funding decisions are expected to be announced in the fall of 2026. An informational webinar is provided prior to the application period to guide prospective applicants. Successful grantees are required to complete a project report within one year of receiving funds, ensuring accountability and documentation of outcomes. The program operates on an annual cycle, reinforcing its role as a recurring funding opportunity for Montana-based service organizations.
