New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant

The New Mexico Clean and Beautiful Grant Program, administered by the New Mexico Tourism Department, aims to uphold the objectives of the state’s “Litter Control and Beautification Act” by funding and supporting local government efforts to eliminate litter, reduce waste, and improve public spaces. This annual competitive grant opportunity enables municipalities, counties, tribal governments, and other governmental units within New Mexico to implement initiatives that advance environmental sustainability and community pride. Grants support projects aligned with one or more of the program's five major goals: ending littering, reducing waste, beautifying communities, empowering youth, and increasing program capacity. Projects must directly contribute to these objectives, and collaborative initiatives with nonprofits or school districts are permitted if formal agreements are established. All applicants must be in good standing with the New Mexico Taxation and Revenue Department and provide valid state tax ID numbers. Matching funds equal to 25% of the grant amount are required and may be met through monetary or in-kind contributions, including government labor, volunteer hours, or donated goods and services. Youth employment under the program requires adherence to age and wage guidelines, along with formal verification documentation. Funding is disbursed in two parts: an initial 50% is released upon execution of the grant agreement and submission of an invoice, while the final 50% is reimbursed after project completion, contingent on submission of all required documentation. This includes expense worksheets, backup financials, and activity reports. Quarterly progress reports and a mandatory mid-year check-in are also required. The application window for the FY26 cycle closed on April 4, 2025. Funded activities will be conducted between July 1, 2025 and June 30, 2026.
