Literacy Opportunity Fund to help Nonprofit Organizations

The Literacy Opportunity Fund is administered by ProLiteracy, a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing adult literacy across the United States. ProLiteracy works with literacy organizations, educators, and learners to improve access to education and support services for adults seeking to improve their reading, writing, and communication skills. The fund is made possible through support from the Nora Roberts Foundation and is designed to strengthen the capacity of grassroots literacy providers working directly with adult learners. The primary purpose of the Literacy Opportunity Fund is to provide financial support to nonprofit organizations that deliver direct literacy services to adult students. The grant emphasizes improving educational outcomes, expanding access to literacy programming, and strengthening the operational sustainability of organizations in this sector. Funding is intended to enhance the ability of organizations to transform lives through literacy by supporting both ongoing operations and innovative program development. Grant funds may be used for a wide range of allowable expenses, including general operating costs such as staff salaries, teacher stipends, instructional materials, supplies, equipment, and facility rental. In addition, organizations may use funds to develop new adult literacy programs or expand existing initiatives. The fund does not support indirect literacy activities such as book distribution or library lending programs, and all funded work must involve direct service to adult learners. Eligibility for the grant is limited to organizations that meet several specific criteria. Applicants must be registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations with a valid Employer Identification Number and must be located within the United States. Eligible applicants must provide direct literacy services to adult students and must not have received funding from the Literacy Opportunity Fund within the previous 12 months. Applications must be complete and detailed in order to be considered for review. The application process is structured into four funding rounds per year, with defined opening and closing dates. Applications open quarterly and must be submitted within the designated window for each round. If a deadline falls on a weekend or holiday, it is extended to the next business day. Applicants are required to submit a complete application through the designated application system, including organizational details and a brief summary of proposed use of funds. Applications are reviewed based on their completeness and alignment with the fund’s objectives, particularly the extent to which the proposed work directly benefits adult learners. Decisions are typically announced approximately one to two months after the application deadline for each round. The program operates on a recurring quarterly cycle, allowing organizations multiple opportunities to apply throughout the year.
