This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits R01 grant applications that propose independent research projects that are within the scientific mission areas of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). This program is intended to support Early Stage and New Investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from groups underrepresented in the health-related sciences. Investigators from diverse backgrounds, including those from underrepresented groups (e.g., seeNOT-OD-20-031, Notice of NIHs Interest in Diversity), are eligible to apply. Investigators from categories A-C are particularly encouraged to work with their institutions to apply. Preliminary data are not required for this NOFO. All applications require a letter of affirmation from the applicant institution documenting the Investigators eligibility. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) seeks applications to develop, implement, and evaluate a human abuse potential (HAP) study of botanical Kratom. FDA has previously warned consumers about the use of Kratom (Mitragyna speciosa), a plant indigenous to Southeast Asia. Kratom alkaloids have demonstrated both affinity and activity at receptor sites known to be associated with abuse, such as mu opioid receptors. Although Kratom use is prevalent, to date, clinical evaluations of its abuse potential have been limited. The proposed HAP study should be performed in accordance with the guidance for industry, "Assessment of Abuse Potential of Drugs," including (but not limited to) the selection of an appropriate comparator(s) and outcome measures, statistical analyses etc. Interested parties, will also complete the submission of an Investigational New Drug (IND) application and obtain Institutional Review Board (IRB) clearance.

The Maternity Group Home (MGH) program provides safe, stable, and appropriate shelter for pregnant and/or parenting youth and young adults ages 16 to under 22 who have runaway or are experiencing homelessness, and their dependent child(ren), for 18 months and, under extenuating circumstances, up to 21 months. Service providers must accommodate for the needs and safety of the dependent children to include facility safety standards for infants and children on the premises. MGH services include, but are not limited to, parenting skills, child development, family budgeting, and health and nutrition education, in addition to the required services provided under the Transitional Living Program to help MGH youth and young adults realize improvements in four core outcome areas. The MGH combination of shelter and services is designed to promote long-term, economic independence to ensure the well-being of the youth and their child(ren).
