The use of dried blood spots to screen newborns for serious diseases has had a significant impact in saving lives and improving developmental outcomes since 1963. The adoption of new technologies into public health laboratory workflows has made it possible to screen newborns for an increasing number of diseases. Today, advanced technologies, such as Next Generation Whole Genome Sequencing and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry, can enhance key aspects of newborn screening (NBS) practice, including early detection of current and newly added diseases. However, incorporating these advanced and complex technologies into NBS often requires substantial resources. To enhance NBS practice, CDC announces a new NOFO for a public health laboratory to establish a NBS Center of Excellence that will 1) develop infrastructure to implement existing, advanced technologies to expand NBS system capacity, 2) use advanced technologies as second and third tier testing platforms to optimize screening performance, and 3) incorporate bio-informatics to analyze complex biochemical and molecular data. Over the four-year project, the recipient will pilot methods to enhance NBS practices in public health laboratories, collaborate and share findings with the NBS community, and partner with CDC subject-matter experts on data harmonization and modernization efforts. This project will better position NBS programs to adapt to advanced technologies and meet increasing demands within NBS.

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits R01 grant applications that propose independent research projects that are within the scientific mission areas of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Goals and Objective The primary objective of the Culvert AOP Program is to meaningfully improve or restore anadromous fish passage through the replacement, removal, or repair of culverts or weirs, which may include infrastructure to facilitate fish passage around or over the weir and weir improvements. A weir is a constructed barrier on a stream channel designed to provide hydraulic control without completely stopping flow or creating a large storage impoundment. A dam is not a weir for the purposes of this program. Funding Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (Pub. L. 117-58, November 15, 2021), also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, provides $200 million annually for FY 2022-2026. This FOA will support integrated, interdisciplinary research teams from prior BRAIN technology and/or integrated approaches teams, and/or new projects from the research community that focus on examining circuit functions related to behavior, using advanced and innovative technologies. The goal will be to support programs with a team science approach that can realize meaningful outcomes within 5-plus years. Awards will be made for 5 years, with a possibility of one competing renewal. Applications should address overarching principles of circuit function in the context of specific neural systems underlying sensation, perception, emotion, motivation, cognition, decision-making, motor control, communication, or homeostasis. Applications should incorporate theory-/model-driven experimental design and should offer predictive models as deliverables. Applications should seek to understand circuits of the central nervous system by systematically controlling stimuli and/or behavior while actively recording and/or manipulating relevant dynamic patterns of neural activity and by measuring the resulting behaviors and/or perceptions. Applications are expected to employ approaches guided by specified theoretical constructs, and are encouraged to employ quantitative, mechanistic models where appropriate. Applications will be required to manage their data and analysis methods in a prototype framework that will be developed and used in the proposed U19 project and exchanged with other U19 awardees for further refinement and development. Model systems, including the possibility of multiple species ranging from invertebrates to humans, can be employed and should be appropriately justified. Budgets should be commensurate with multi-component teams of research expertise including neurobiologists, statisticians, physicists, mathematicians, engineers, computer scientists, and data scientists, as appropriate - that seek to cross boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration.
