The use of dried blood spots to screen newborns for serious diseases has had a significant impact in saving lives and improving developmental outcomes since 1963. The adoption of new technologies into public health laboratory workflows has made it possible to screen newborns for an increasing number of diseases. Today, advanced technologies, such as Next Generation Whole Genome Sequencing and High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry, can enhance key aspects of newborn screening (NBS) practice, including early detection of current and newly added diseases. However, incorporating these advanced and complex technologies into NBS often requires substantial resources. To enhance NBS practice, CDC announces a new NOFO for a public health laboratory to establish a NBS Center of Excellence that will 1) develop infrastructure to implement existing, advanced technologies to expand NBS system capacity, 2) use advanced technologies as second and third tier testing platforms to optimize screening performance, and 3) incorporate bio-informatics to analyze complex biochemical and molecular data. Over the four-year project, the recipient will pilot methods to enhance NBS practices in public health laboratories, collaborate and share findings with the NBS community, and partner with CDC subject-matter experts on data harmonization and modernization efforts. This project will better position NBS programs to adapt to advanced technologies and meet increasing demands within NBS.

Dear Prospective Applicants:The United States Agency for International Development Mission in Burundi (USAID Burundi) is seeking applications from qualified entities to implement a five-year Activity that focuses on Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health, Immunization, and Malaria (RMNCI+M) in Burundi, titled Kira Ukuze, as further described in Section A of this Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO). Responses to USAID Burundi feedback must be incorporated into the revised technical application. Subject to the availability of funds, USAID Burundi intends to make a single award to the applicant who best meets the objectives of this funding opportunity based on the merit review criteria described in Section E of this NOFO, subject to a risk assessment in accordance with ADS 303.3.9. While an award is anticipated as a result of this NOFO, USAID Burundi reserves the right to fund any or none of the initial technical applications submitted.

This Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) solicits R01 grant applications that propose independent research projects that are within the scientific mission areas of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD). Applications should incorporate theory-/model-driven experimental design and should offer predictive models as deliverables. Applications should seek to understand circuits of the central nervous system by systematically controlling stimuli and/or behavior while actively recording and/or manipulating relevant dynamic patterns of neural activity and by measuring the resulting behaviors and/or perceptions. Applications are expected to employ approaches guided by specified theoretical constructs, and are encouraged to employ quantitative, mechanistic models where appropriate. Applications will be required to manage their data and analysis methods in a prototype framework that will be developed and used in the proposed U19 project and exchanged with other U19 awardees for further refinement and development. Model systems, including the possibility of multiple species ranging from invertebrates to humans, can be employed and should be appropriately justified. Budgets should be commensurate with multi-component teams of research expertise including neurobiologists, statisticians, physicists, mathematicians, engineers, computer scientists, and data scientists, as appropriate - that seek to cross boundaries of interdisciplinary collaboration.
