Humanities Grants

This grant provides funding for innovative projects in education, arts, community improvement, historical preservation, mental health, and forestry conservation for eligible nonprofit organizations.

CDP Production grants are available for documentary media productions that focus on California subjects and issues, using the humanities to provide context and perspective. Projects may include film, audio, digital media, web-based and broadcast series, podcasts, interactive, VR, and multiplatform projects. There is no specific length requirement for projects. Projects must approach the subject matter from a humanities perspective and involve at least two Humanities Advisors. Eligible applicants may request funding up to $50,000 with a required 1:1 match of cash or in-kind contributions from non-federal sources. The maximum term for a CDP Production grant is three years after the start of the grant period. Applicants must be non-profit organizations or individuals being fiscally sponsored by a tax-exempt organization or municipal/state agency with federal 501(c)(3) status. Fiscal sponsorship does not need to be confirmed by the application deadline but should be confirmed within 30 days after the application due date if awarded. Grant funds are disbursed in three installments: 50% upon approval of signed award documents; 40% upon approval of an interim report; and the final 10% upon project completion and approval of a final report. Applications for CDP Production Grants are submitted online through the California Humanities’ website by November 1, 2023. Applicants will be notified of receipt of their proposals by email. Notification of grant decisions will be sent by email to both the Authorizing Official at the applicant organization and Project Director by April 1, 2024. The Spotlight on Humanities in Higher Education program, run by the NEH Division of Education Programs, provides funding for small projects that enhance humanities education at smaller colleges and universities, particularly those serving underserved populations, with a focus on community colleges, minority-serving institutions, rural schools, and institutions where over 40% of students receive Pell grants.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Research Programs is accepting applications for the Summer Stipends program. The purpose of this program is to stimulate new research and publication in the humanities. Summer Stipends support continuous, full-time work on a humanities project for a period of two consecutive months. NEH funds may support recipients compensation, travel, and other costs related to the proposed scholarly research.

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Division of Education Programs is accepting applications for the Humanities Connections program. This program seeks to expand the role of the humanities in undergraduate education at two- and four-year institutions by encouraging partnerships between humanities faculty and their counterparts in other areas of study. Humanities Connections projects should plan or implement a curriculum connecting the humanities to one or more non-humanities fields, including but not limited to the physical and natural sciences; pre-service or professional programs, including law and business; or computer science, data science, and other technology-driven fields. Projects must incorporate the approaches and learning activities of both the humanities and the non-humanities disciplines involved.

This program provides $1,000 micro-grants to individuals and groups for creative and innovative projects that positively impact their communities.

The U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL), Bureau of International Labor Affairs (ILAB), intends to provide funding to an existing cooperative agreement with International Labor Organization (ILO), without full and open competition, to increase the projects efforts to prevent and mitigate new and emerging health-related crises affecting workers in agricultural sectors in Mexico, including climate change induced heat stress of workers in the countrys chili pepper and tomato supply chains. The Cultural and Community Resilience program supports community-based efforts to mitigate climate change and COVID-19 pandemic impacts, safeguard cultural resources, and foster cultural resilience through identifying, documenting, and/or collecting cultural heritage and community experience. The program prioritizes projects from disadvantaged communities in the United States or its jurisdictions, and NEH encourages applications that employ inclusive methodologies. This NOFO covers the January and May 2023 deadlines.

Humanities Initiatives strengthen the teaching and study of the humanities at institutions of higher education by developing new or enhancing existing programs, resources (including those in digital format), or courses that explore, interpret, and preserve the diversity of human cultures, ideas, and practices, past and present. Projects must address a core topic or set of themes drawn from humanities areas such as history, philosophy, religion, literature, or humanities-informed composition and writing skills. NEH welcomes applications for projects that are modest in scope, duration, and budget, as well as applications for expansive, long-term projects.

The Digital Projects for the Public program supports projects that interpret and analyze humanities content in primarily digital platforms and formats, such as websites, mobile applications and tours, interactive touch screens and kiosks, games, and virtual environments. This program supports projects that develop and implement educational programs for professionals who preserve and provide access to humanities collections. Such materials include but are not limited to paper-based, photographic, archaeological, ethnographic, artistic, audiovisual, digitized, and born-digital collections. Advancing long-term access to these materials for scholars, students, and the public requires skilled professionals from varied backgrounds and communities working in organizations large and small. NEH makes awards in this program to organizations that offer national, regional, or statewide education and training programs across the pedagogical landscape for current or emerging professionals. Projects may be at any stage, from early curriculum development to advanced implementation, and projects may include partnerships with academic or non-academic institutions.

The Research and Development program supports projects that address major challenges in preserving or providing access to humanities collections and resources. Research and Development offers two funding tiers to address projects at all stages of development and implementation. The Public Impact Projects at Smaller Organizations program supports small and mid-sized museums and cultural organizations in the creation of public humanities programming and strengthens their capacity to develop such programming. NEH’s Public Impact Projects encourage you to think critically about the humanities programming your organization currently offers and to assess your organization’s relationship to your community and surrounding neighborhoods. You will develop or implement strategies to strengthen the interpretive goals of your organization and ensure your public programing meets audience needs. Funded projects may focus on evaluating current interpretive programing, collections, and other available resources to identify new story opportunities or interpretive methods. Additionally, you may choose to propose the implementation of new programs you have already developed. Another option is to request support for professional development opportunities that will assist your staff and volunteers in expanding their skills as interpreters of humanities grounded material. You may also combine one or more of these approaches to create a strategy that meets the needs of your organization and audience.

The project will expand and improve coordination around ongoing labor trafficking enforcement efforts in Ghana, Cte d'Ivoire, and Benin. The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) Office of Digital Humanities is accepting applications for the Dangers Opportunities of Technology: Perspectives from the Humanities program. This program supports research that examines technology and its relationship to society through the lens of the humanities, with a focus on the dangers and/or opportunities presented by technology, broadly defined. NEH is particularly interested in projects that examine the role of technology in shaping current social and cultural issues.

The Fellowship Programs at Independent Research Institutions (FPIRI) program supports institutions that provide fellowships for advanced humanities research in the U.S. and abroad, foster communities of intellectual exchange among participating scholars, and provide access to resources that might otherwise not be available to the participating scholars. Fellowship programs may be administered by independent centers for advanced study, libraries, and museums in the U.S.; American overseas research centers; and American organizations that have expertise in promoting humanities research in foreign countries. Individual scholars apply directly to the institutions for fellowships. In evaluating applications, consideration is given to the library holdings, archives, special collections, and other resources—either on site or nearby—that institutions make available to fellows. FPIRI fellowship tenure must be continuous and last from four to twelve months. Residential fellows are expected to be in residence during their entire tenure period and to work on their projects on a full-time basis. Likewise, nonresidential NEH-funded fellows are expected to work on their projects on a full-time basis. If a fellow is obliged through special circumstances to depart before the end of the tenure period, he/she shall receive a prorated stipend.
