The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is soliciting innovative proposals to identify and optimize novel molecules that exhibit inhibitory effects on Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-CRISPR associated proteins (CRISPR-Cas) gene editing processes. The Broad-Spectrum Antagonists for Editors (B-SAFE) program is explicitly seeking transformative approaches enabling the discovery or design of novel inhibitors of gene editing technologies with enhanced activity, utility, and breadth of coverage. Novel inhibitor activity will be assessed in vitro over the course of the program and a subset of top performing molecules will be selected for scale-up at quantities sufficient for testing and evaluation by Department of Defense (DoD) stakeholders. In concert, DARPA is interested in exploring methods to rapidly discover inhibitor molecules for novel gene editing technologies beyond CRISPR-Cas systems to keep pace with the rapidly advancing field and promote the safe, controlled use of these technologies. Research that generates incremental improvements to the existing state-of-the-art are specifically excluded.

The United States Agency for International Development Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (USAID/DRC) is gathering information to develop health financing, governance, and information systems activities in support of the DRCs strategic plan for 2021-2030 towards universal health coverage (UHC). The purpose of the Health Financing, Governance and Information Systems (HFG/IS) activity is to strengthen national and select provincial governments capacity to identify and act upon key levers for resource mobilization and for reductions in household catastrophic health expenditures, to identify and respond to gaps in equity, quality, and coverage of health services, to strengthen citizens capacity to hold government accountable for health services, and to foster collaborative learning. Targeted systems strengthening include efforts to improve the resilience and capacity of the public health system to prevent, detect, and respond to emerging infectious disease threats with a one health approach. USAID envisions that this activity will strengthen the role of citizens, women, and marginalized groups in the design, delivery, monitoring, and accountability of health services, which in turn fosters trust in the health system and sustainability. Recognizing the interdependence of governance, financing, and information, this activity supports a targeted, synergistic approach to complement the USAID Integrated Health Services Delivery Accelerator and USAID Sant Gouvernance Activities. Provincial-level interventions will focus on the 8 provinces of implementation for these Activities (Kasai Central, Kasai Oriental, Haut-Katanga, Haut- Lomami, Lomani, Lualaba, Tanganyika, and Sud-Kivu), be coordinated to promote synergies and avoid duplication of efforts, and contribute to a broader learning agenda to foster adoption of best practices and national scale-up. USAID envisions a well-planned collaborative learning agenda for this Activity and commitment to gender and social inclusion principles.

The National Press Foundation is offering the Covering Equitable Community Development Journalism Fellowship, an expenses-paid program designed to enhance journalists' ability to report on equitable community development. This initiative aligns with the foundation's mission to support and educate journalists, specifically by equipping them to investigate the intersection of policy, public and private financing, and calls for equitable housing, parks, and other community assets. The program aims to address the critical need for comprehensive and nuanced reporting on how resources are allocated and what initiatives receive support within various regions. The target beneficiaries of this fellowship are U.S.-based journalists working across print, TV, radio, or online media, with a particular encouragement for those who cover race and metro beats. The program emphasizes diversity and welcomes applicants from across the nation. The impact goal is to empower these journalists to better understand and report on pervasive racial gaps and the policies and investments in their communities related to health, wealth, and overall community well-being. By providing specialized training, the fellowship seeks to foster a more informed public discourse on community development issues. The fellowship's priorities and focuses include an immersive exploration into community development issues, especially in the context of small and mid-sized cities. The program will delve into how financing and investing institutionsโsuch as community development financial institutions (CDFIs), philanthropic impact investors, private banks, and other investorsโprioritize projects. It will also examine how policymakers and public officials can actively involve residents in decision-making and ensure accountability for anti-racist practices in the community development sector. Other key topics include identifying conditions that lead to healthier, more equitable communities with access to essential resources like affordable housing, education, and healthcare, as well as addressing environmental justice as a community development issue. The expected outcomes and measurable results of this fellowship include equipping journalists with the knowledge and context to add breadth to their coverage of community development. By bringing together experts from health equity, nonprofit, policy, financing, and community organizing sectors, the program anticipates that fellows will gain a deeper understanding of complex issues. While specific measurable results are not explicitly stated as quantitative metrics, the qualitative outcome is a more capable and informed journalistic body that can investigate and report on community development effectively, potentially leading to increased public awareness and accountability in these areas.
